Miguel Antonio Otero papers, 1819-1938 (bulk 1890-1938).

The collection is divided into five series. The correspondence series contains business, political, and personal letters including correspondence with Bronson Cutting and with Otero's son, Miguel A. Otero III. The governors papers include files on bills before the territorial legislature, criminal sentences reviewed by Otero, state Republican party poliltics, and speeches. Writings include a manuscript of My life on the frontier, two manuscripts about Billy the Kid, as well as notebooks containing Otero's reminiscences of his life. The business and political papers series includes materials related to financial and legal matters, and political materials regarding the Democratic National Convention of 1924, Otero's service in the Panama Canal Zone, speeches by Otero, and material about the Tejon land grant. The memorabilia series contains a few nineteenth century French documents, presumably collected by Otero. Finally, there are a number of large certificates of appointment and membership housed in the Oversize series.

Born in St. Louis, Mo. in 1849. His family moved to New Mexico in 1851. Otero's first job was working as a bookkeeper wit the family firm, Otero, Sellar & Company. He entered politics in 1883 as City Treasurer of Las Vegas. In 1897 he was appointed Territorial Governor of New Mexico, remained so until 1906. He remained active in politics throughout his life. Kathrine Stinson was born February 14, 1896 in Jackson, Mississippi. She developed an interest in aviation and became one of the first woman air pilots in 1912. She met her husband, Miguel A. Otero, Jr., while recuperating from tubercolosis in Santa Fe, NM. Otero, born August 30, 1892 in Las Vegas, New Mexico, was the the son of Gov. Miguel A. Otero.
